So glad you joined me as part of Harlequin’s Romantic Suspense Event!
This year I celebrated a milestone—my tenth Harlequin novel. And with that, I’ve noticed a pattern in my Love Inspired Suspense novels—I love to throw nature at my characters. With almost every story, I’ve let nature play an important part in the conflict. Even in my less suspenseful sweet romances, it’s always nature and setting that catches my interest first.
With the beauty and brutality of the wilderness and the weather, the unexplored and unknown, and a thousand places to get lost, there’s no other place like Alaska, the last frontier. Now all that’s left to craft a thrilling ride of a story is to add the romantic suspense hero.
How do you like your heroes?
I love the protectors best, but most heroes have that innate sense of protectiveness inside them whether they know it or not. It just takes the right woman playing opposite him in the story to bring out the best in him. Or sometimes the worst. But the right character to play his romantic interest should always bring out the protectiveness in a hero.
Mountain search and rescuers already spend their time and energy finding strangers and rescuing them, even in the worst of conditions, so have just the right appeal for a romantic suspense. Add to that a mountain search and rescue hero knows how to battle nature. Sure, as authors we have to beat our heroes up a little, but in our romantic suspense stories . . .
they always win against nature. . . and they always get the girl. Or maybe. . .the girl always gets the guy.
